The very first question we must ask is, “What is praise for?” Why do we offer praise? If you are at your favorite football game, and your team scores, you will likely jump and scream, you will cheer your team on. What if there is a victory in the church house? Do you cheer your team on to the victory or are you sheepish and quiet? When we cheer at a ball game, we are showing those around us who we support. When we cheer for God, so to speak, we are still showing those around us whose team we are on and what we believe.
When your favorite team comes on the field, how do you respond?
Num 23:21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.
1 Sam 4:5-6 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. (6) And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.
Isa 12:6 Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
I dare say, when your team takes the field, you cheer! You want everyone to know your team is in town. But is that the only reason? No. You also want your team to know you support them. You want them to hear your support so they will be encouraged to fight harder and fight longer in the battle. Without cheering, it is easy for the team to get discouraged. It becomes easy for the team to get depressed, dejected and defeated. If you will cheer for your favorite football team, why not your God? Why not cheer for your Christian team? The next time you are in church, look around you. All those people you will see – they are on your team! Cheer them on! What about God? Have you taken time to praise Him? Your praise for God will encourage someone else. You just might say the right words to remind someone they shouldn’t give up. Encourage each other. Encourage the battle! Sound the battle cry!
Sound the battle cry! See, the foe is nigh;
Raise the standard high for the Lord;
Gird your armor on, stand firm every one;
Rest your cause upon His holy Word.
Rouse, then, soldiers, rally round the banner,
Ready, steady, pass the word along;
Onward, forward, shout aloud Hosanna!
Christ is Captain of the mighty throng.
Strong to meet the foe, marching on we go,
While our cause we know, must prevail;
Shield and banner bright, gleaming in the light,
Battling for the right we ne’er can fail.
O! Thou God of all, hear us when we call,
Help us one and all by Thy grace;
When the battle’s done, and the vict’ry’s won,
May we wear the crown before Thy face.
Will you sound forth the battle cry today?
