Yesterday, Fox News reported that Ohio Senator Rob Portman announced that he is no longer opposed to “Gay Marriage” (  Another Republican politician has turned his back on God’s definition of the family.     What is marriage, what is the family and why is it important that we stand against so-called Gay Marriage?

We must first establish exactly what marriage is. Simply, marriage is the union between one man and one woman to establish a new home. Throughout the Bible, the home or the family has always been the core unit which God has used to continue the human race. But why a family? Other animals reproduce without a family unity. Dogs, for example, have absolutely no concern for which dog they mate with. Other animals seem to have some ritual or go through some contest to determine which potential mate is the strongest. Most animals (yes, there are some exceptions to this) are simply not concerned with having the same mate from year to year.

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Unlike the animals, God intended one man and one woman to each leave their parent’s families for the purpose of becoming one and creating a new family. God actually gives us two indications of this pattern. First, we see the phrase, “a man shall leave his father and his mother.” What is the significance of this? We see the family defined. We see a father, a mother and we see a child (the man or son) is in the passage.  The son is preparing to leave. He is departing his family to take a wife and form a new family. Second, we see an action. The man shall cleave.  To cleave is to separate.  However, when you separate from something, you must also separate to something else. To leave one thing, you must go to something else. In the case of marriage, the husband and his wife each leave their respective families and join with each other to form new families. There is a simple pattern: one man and one woman. God has never condoned any union other than the union of one man and one woman. One man joins with one woman to form a new family. A man and his bride.

There is a far deeper meaning to the marriage of one man and one woman. At the beginning of creation, when God ordained the marriage of Adam and Eve, God was looking forward in time. God saw a time in the near future when Adam and Eve would sin. God looked further forward in time and saw the plan for salvation and the church. When God established marriage, it was intended to be a means of reproduction, but marriage was also intended to be a picture of salvation and a picture of the church.

Ephesians 5:31-32 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. (32) This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

We are all quite familiar with Ephesians chapter five. This passage is often used to describe the family: the relationship of husband and wife, but this passage also reveals a great mystery: the mystery of the church. The marriage we see in Ephesians 5 is an analogy. Marriage is merely a comparison we can understand. Marriage is used as an analogy to describe the relationship between Christ and His bride: the church. When we understand this simple parallel, that marriage is a picture of the unity between Christ and the Church, we also understand why marriage cannot be perverted.  When two men (or two women) form a physical union as if they were husband and wife, they are committing what God clearly defines as an abomination. An abomination is not and cannot be a picture of the holy union of Jesus and the Church. As Christians, we must stand with God and stand against the union of sodomites being called a marriage.
